Ranking Methodology

Purpose

SG Lawyer Reviews publishes rankings to help readers identify law firms that may be relevant to a particular practice area, client type, budget, or service requirement.

Our rankings are editorial resources. They are not official league tables, regulatory endorsements, or guarantees that a listed firm is suitable for every matter.

Types of Rankings

We may publish rankings such as:

  • Best Divorce Law Firms in Singapore
  • Best Criminal Law Firms in Singapore
  • Best Corporate Law Firms in Singapore
  • Best Employment Law Firms in Singapore
  • Best Law Firms for Startups
  • Best Law Firms for Fixed-Fee Services
  • Best Law Firms for Foreigners
  • Best Boutique Law Firms
  • Best Law Firms for Online Consultations

Each ranking may use different criteria depending on its subject.

Eligibility

To be considered, a firm should generally:

  1. Operate lawfully in or from Singapore.
  2. Offer services relevant to the ranking.
  3. Have sufficient publicly available or submitted information for evaluation.
  4. Meet any additional eligibility requirements stated on the ranking page.

Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

We may exclude a firm when:

  • Its relevance cannot be established
  • Its information cannot be verified
  • It is no longer operating
  • Its services fall outside the ranking scope
  • Available information is insufficient
  • Inclusion could materially mislead readers

Research Process

Our ranking process may involve:

  1. Defining the ranking category.
  2. Identifying potentially relevant firms.
  3. Reviewing official and public information.
  4. Assessing firms against category-specific criteria.
  5. Requesting information or comments where appropriate.
  6. Comparing firms using a consistent framework.
  7. Conducting an editorial quality review.
  8. Publishing the ranking with methodology disclosures.
  9. Reviewing corrections and material updates.

We do not claim to evaluate every eligible law firm in Singapore unless expressly stated.

Core Ranking Criteria

Depending on the ranking, we may consider the following factors.

Practice-Area Experience

We consider the firm’s apparent depth and relevance in the practice area.

Team Strength

We may consider the number, seniority, background, and complementary experience of relevant lawyers.

Client Suitability

We assess whether the firm serves the client group addressed by the ranking.

Service Range

We consider whether the firm can address common and related issues within the ranking category.

Accessibility

We may consider language options, consultation formats, office access, and clarity of contact information.

Fee Transparency

For cost-sensitive rankings, we may give greater weight to published fees, fixed-fee services, or clear billing explanations.

Public Feedback

Public reviews may provide context, but they are not treated as conclusive evidence.

Professional Recognition

Relevant recognition may be considered, subject to the credibility and transparency of the awarding body.

Educational Value

We may consider whether the firm publishes accurate, useful information that helps prospective clients understand relevant legal issues.

Responsiveness to Verification

We may consider whether a firm responds to reasonable requests to confirm factual information. However, non-participation is not automatically treated negatively.

Weighting

Criteria are not necessarily weighted equally.

For example:

  • A “best affordable law firms” ranking may emphasise fee transparency.
  • A “best corporate law firms” ranking may place more weight on team depth and transaction experience.
  • A “best law firms for foreigners” ranking may consider languages and cross-border experience.
  • A “best online law firms” ranking may focus on digital consultation and document processes.

Where practical, the page will explain the most influential factors.

Ranking Order

A ranking may be:

  • Numerically ordered
  • Grouped into tiers
  • Listed alphabetically
  • Organised by client need
  • Presented as an unranked shortlist

The absence of a number does not mean the firms are equal in every respect.

When firms receive similar assessments, we may use editorial judgement to determine order or place them within the same tier.

Paid and Sponsored Placement

Firms cannot purchase a higher organic editorial ranking.

A sponsored placement may appear on a ranking page, but it must be:

  • Clearly labelled
  • Visually distinguishable
  • Separate from the organic methodology
  • Excluded from the calculation of editorial position

Enhanced profiles and advertising may increase visibility without changing editorial scores.

Changes to Rankings

Rankings may change when:

  • New firms are considered
  • Existing firms change services
  • Lawyers join or leave
  • Firms merge or close
  • New information becomes available
  • A ranking methodology changes
  • Errors are corrected
  • The legal services market changes

A previous ranking position does not create a right to retain that position.

Limitations

A ranking cannot fully measure:

  • Compatibility between a lawyer and client
  • Internal case strategy
  • Confidential outcomes
  • Individual lawyer availability
  • The full quality of private advice
  • Future performance
  • The merits of a particular legal matter

Readers should speak with more than one lawyer where appropriate and assess experience, fees, communication, conflicts, and scope before engagement.

Requests for Inclusion
